  1. Quality street environments are established where the building front is prominent, positively addressing the street and not obsured by the car or garage
  2. Convenient and safe routes between the parking space and house are provided
  3. Car and cycle parking is safe and secure
  4. An efficient use of the land is achieved without excessive land taken by parking and manoeurvring​

On street parking is used in many successful cities such as Melbourne and Vancouver as a deliberate feature of neighbourhood design.  This section will discuss the positive and negative attributes of parking on the street, and offer guidance for achieving quality outcomes.

Advantages of on-street parking

  • The number of driveway crossovers is minimised, allowing for a continuous and accessible footpath along the street.
  • Streetscape berms are retained to create a highly landscaped and attractive neighbourhood street, which encourages walking and cycling to local destinations.
  • Streets are safer due to more activity on the street.
  • On street parking is very space efficient and maximises quality open space and housing.
  • Safe access to the front door on foot and cycle is enabled.
  • Parked cars create a buffer between moving traffic and the footpath.
  • Parking spaces are used more frequently because everyone can use them; therefore fewer spaces are needed overall compared to allocated spaces.
  • On-street parking is low cost.
  • Houses gain more open space in front.
  • Residents and passersby can keep a good eye on the cars in the neighbourhood.


Disadvantages of on-street parking:

  • Parking is not allocated.
  • There is potentially limited space for parking where residential parking permits are not in place.
  • The width of the road can be affected, particularly if parking is perpendicular to the road.
  • There are fewer opportunities for long-term covered cycle parking.

Better Design Practice

Some car parking should be provided on the street, where practicable. Visitors should park on the street and walk to the terraced house where possible. All cars should be surveyed from ground and upper floor windows. Include breaks in rows of on-street parking bays approximately every six spaces. This allows space for street trees to break up the impact of parking, and make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road.

Rules of Thumb

Provide one visitor or short-term cycle parking space per 20 houses.
